Connect a domain you already own (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare)
Add your domain in Domain & Email, add the two records Buildy shows at your registrar, then click Verify.
Connecting a domain you bought elsewhere takes two DNS records at your registrar and one click on Verify in Buildy. The records are the same for GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare, Squarespace and every other registrar.
Steps
- Open Domain & Email from Dashboard, or Tools on a phone.
- Click Connect existing domain. Read the notice, tick the box and click I AGREE. You make the changes at your registrar yourself.
- Type your domain without
http://and withoutwww, for exampleexample.com, and click Connect Domain. Buildy opens Connect your website with two records. These instructions stay open until the website is verified. - Sign in to your registrar and open the DNS settings for the domain. Add the two records exactly as Buildy shows them: an A record and a
wwwrecord. - Delete any other A record on
@. If your old host's record stays, your domain points at two places and the site fails for some visitors. - Save at the registrar. Back in Buildy, click Verify. DNS changes can take from a few minutes to a few hours to spread. If it still shows Pending Verification, click Verify again later.
- After verification, the instructions collapse into Website DNS details. Your domain has an External domain label. When it shows Verified, click Publish & Share.
Registrar notes
- Cloudflare: set the cloud icon on both records to DNS only (grey), not Proxied (orange).
- For help finding the DNS page, use the registrar links Buildy shows under your domain.
Common problems
Stuck on "Pending Verification"
See My domain is stuck on Pending Verification.
"The domain doesn't belong to you"
See The domain doesn't belong to you.
"Please remove the www. prefix"
Type the domain without www.. Buildy makes www work with the CNAME record.
"Some visitors may not reach your website"
Buildy found extra A records. Remove the ones it lists at your registrar, keep the one Buildy shows, and click Check again.
